Paleobiome is a 3D simulation project that is under development. Its mission is to reconstruct past biomes in an engaging and interactive environment, allowing people to learn about important chapters in earth’s history that often go unnoticed.

The reconstruction of a biome starts with with the fossils from the area. All of the models used for the simulation are posted on Paleobiome’s Sketchfab page, and many of these models are animated. These models are an excellent resource for those seeking to understand the anatomy of fossil organisms.

Bringing Fossils to Life is the scientific consultant to the Paleobiome project, which has porovided an opportunity for growth for both parties. The reconstruction of an organism can be a long and difficult process, because even if extensive research has been conducted on the organism, finding this research and portraying it correctly is important to accurate representation.

A progression of forests that were reconstructed by Paleobiome, starting in the Silurian and ending with the end of the Cretaceous.

Paleobiome is under heavy development as new features and biomes are added. Among the biomes under development are Seven Stars and Red Hill of Pennsylvania, Miguasha of Canada, and the Hunsrück Slate of Germany, as well as many other non-Devonian sites ranging from the Ediacaran to the Quaternary in age. The rich integration of Paleozoic ecosystems into such a project is rare and will bring to light a wealth of underappreciated groups of plants and animals.

As biomes are reconstructed, videos that were captured in real time from the simulation are released to Paleobiome’s Youtube channel. These short glimpses of the Paleozoic as it is understood offer insight as to the everyday lives of the organisms shown.

Paleobiome’s official website, www.paleobiome.com, is where you can find a list of the biomes that have been or are in the process of being reconstructed. Here you can also find other features that will be included into the simulation.
